Colonial Style Homes
The American Colonial style home traces it’s origins to a combination of styles brought over by the English Colonists. Influenced by the homes of their mother country, early colonial homes were simple and stately. Known for their simplicity, Colonial homes were symmetrical, unadorned, and practical.
The classic New England Colonial home is two stories, white or stained, with a door in the direct center of the building. The colonial house is square or rectangular with both first and second floors of the same dimension. Windows are often symmetrical, aligning from first to second floor. Roof systems are most often gable end style, but hip roofs are not uncommon.
Typical interior styling will include hardwood floors, central staircases with open railing and traditional trim styles. A popular variation on the colonial design is the New England Colonial Farmhouse. Similar to the traditional colonial, the farmhouse will likely exhibit Greek returns on the gable ends, and covered front and side porches.
Colonial style homes typically offer the lowest cost per square foot of living space. This can be attributed to the full size second floor plan offering the maximum usable square feet in the smallest footprint. A typical 2,000 square foot colonial having 1,000 square feet of concrete foundation, and 1,000 square feet of roof can be built very efficiently at a very competitive price.
