The American Colonial style house is a combination of the styles brought over by the English Colonists and the available materials on the New England coast. Influenced by the homes of their mother country, the early English settlers built models of English style manners and cottages out of split New England logs.

During the architectural Colonial revival of the 1930s, the New England Colonial mansion became a popular reproduction, though the originals were far from mansions. Early colonial houses were simple and stately. Known for their simplicity, Colonial houses were symmetrical, un-adorned, and practical.

The classic New England Colonial home is two stories, white or un-painted, with a door in the direct center of the building. The colonial house is square with symmetrical windows and a chimney running through the middle of the building to maximize indoor heating.

Because the first colonists did not have concrete or paint, their houses were made of split logs, fastened together with mud. Thatched roofs and un-finished surfaces characterized the colonist’s first dwellings, a far cry from the New England Colonial mansions of today. Once the settlers became more secure in their new setting, their houses became sturdier and a little more interesting.

In the interior of a classic colonial style home you will, most likely, find hardwood floors, a large central hearth and a kitchen with exposed brick walls. Large sturdy staircases with hand-carved banisters can be found in some of the fancier Colonial homes and modern colonial mansions.

Colonial homes are found throughout the country. The Colonial-style plantation mansion of the Southern United States is an example of a modified Colonial style. The same square, symmetrical white houses were adorned with porches and columns to create a new American architectural style that was as unique as its inhabitants.
